Salamander Error Correction announces several Turbo Product Codes

Santa Monica, Calif.Dec. 3, 2010. Salamander Error Correction, a division of Komodo Industries, Inc, today announced the SALx4501ed, and the SALx4502ed high-performance Turbo Product Code (TPC) encoder / decoder “soft” IP devices for wireless communications system applications. The devices are designed to be lower-cost, superior error correction alternatives to the de-facto industry standard Comtech TPC device. Additionally there is a third device, which will be available mid-December 2010, the SALx4503ed, which doubles the current throughput of the SALx4501ed device, at an increase of approximately 30% in area. All three devices are available as VHDL source code, with Verilog source code available upon request.

A turbo decoder is a signal processing component designed to greatly enhance reliable wireless communication and data recovery in the presence of a noisy channel, achieving near optimal spectral efficiency. The newly announced devices from Salamander Error Correction use various architectural innovations to operate with a high degree of efficiency and precision. The TPC devices compliment a broad range of error correction products already offered by Salamander.

 “Our design uses a traditional turbo coding algorithm to achieve maximum error correction accuracy, while avoiding licensing and patent issues that can arise using the approximate ‘modified Chase’ algorithm that is often used for this type of error correction," said John Boynton, President of Salamander Error Correction. "Additionally, our devices are designed for ease of integration and rigorously verified to achieve the highest quality available."

All wireless communications systems require coding to achieve the optimum level of reliability versus power usage. “High performance error control is becoming increasingly critical to the success of any state-of -the-art wireless communications system,” said Mr. Boynton.
